Systems & Concept
Sorption behaviour of contaminants on technical barriers or natural materials in a repository system strongly depends on the geochemical environment, and particularly on the composition of the solution. The concept introduced here treats sorption in dependence of such environmental parameters (Concept).
In a first step, the concept is applied to a hydrogeological system which is well described and documented, the overburden at Gorleben site. The Gorleben site shows typical features which are representative for sedimentary systems in Northern Germany overlying host rocks for potential radioactive waste repositories (System). In the next step (SMILE), the concept is extended to a second representative site to describe hydrogeological and geochemical porcesses.
